WordPress is an incredible piece of software that helps to create a website that is perfect for you and your business.

Here is a brief description of what it is and why I, like many others, choose to use it.

What is WordPress?

In fancy terms, WordPress is a content management system. But really, WordPress can be described a piece of software that allows you to create and manage your digital content.

There are two variations of WordPress which allow you to have different levels of control over your website.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

The main difference between the two is who hosts your website.

WordPress.com is pretty much a one-stop-shop for creating your website. You can choose your domain name, have your website hosted, and start creating your website all in one place.
However the disadvantages are that you don’t have nearly the same levels of flexibility with design or how you use your website. For example, you cannot upload plugins or modify code to create a website that is fully tailored to you and your business.

WordPress.org, however is a downloadable piece of software that you can use with your own choice of domain and hosting packages. But whilst this is more responsibility to set-up and manage (although I can help you with this!), the opportunities for creativity and customising are near-limitless. Which is why the likes of Vogue Magazine, Mercedes and Disney all use WordPress for their websites.

[Please note that for the rest of the blog I will be referring to the WordPress.org software as ‘WP’]

Why Use WordPress?

There are a lot of reasons why WP supports over 60 million websites and over 30% of the Top 10 million Websites in the World.

  • Firstly, it’s free! It’s free to download, use and modify because it’s open-source software.
  • The coding in the WP software is designed by experts who have made it very appealing to search-engines. Meaning that it is easier to get your business’s website seen by the right people. And you can improve your odds of being noticed even further with the right knowhow.
  • If you want to manage your own website, and have the privilege of the time to do so, you will find that once you’ve had a play around with the software, managing the site can be relatively simply. For past clients, I have put together custom “How To” guides so that they can learn exactly what they need to.
  • A big plus-point with WP is that it has been designed with security in mind. So, with the right set-up and management, your website can be kept secure and your customers can be kept happy.
  • Finally, WP allows you to manage a wide variety of media so it will suit all your business needs.
